Mushroom Corals (Discosoma, Rhodactis, Ricordea & Bounce Varieties)

Mushroom corals are among the most popular and adaptable corals in the reef aquarium hobby. Known for their vibrant coloration, flowing textures, and forgiving care requirements, mushroom corals are an excellent choice for both beginner and advanced reef keepers.

This category includes Discosoma, Rhodactis, Ricordea florida, Ricordea yuma, and high-end morphs such as bounce and jawbreaker mushrooms.

What Are Mushroom Corals?

Mushroom corals belong to the corallimorph family (Corallimorpharia). While they resemble stony corals in appearance, they lack a hard calcium skeleton and instead grow as soft, disc-shaped polyps attached to rock.

Their hardy nature and tolerance for a wide range of reef conditions make them one of the most reliable corals in captivity.

Types of Mushroom Corals

Discosoma

Classic smooth-disc mushrooms available in red, blue, green, and multi-color speckled varieties. Extremely hardy and ideal for beginner reef tanks.

Rhodactis

Often referred to as “hairy mushrooms,” Rhodactis feature textured surfaces and include many sought-after bounce varieties.

Ricordea florida

Caribbean ricordea with vibrant, uniform bubble-like vesicles across the disc. Highly collectible and reef safe.

Ricordea yuma

Indo-Pacific ricordea with larger vesicles and dramatic color contrast. Slightly more sensitive but stunning in established systems.

Bounce Mushrooms

Premium morphs (typically Rhodactis) featuring inflated bubble-like growths. Includes well-known varieties such as OG Bounce, Sunkist, and Jawbreaker.

Mushroom Coral Care Guide

Care Level: Easy to Moderate
Lighting: Low to Moderate (some morphs tolerate higher PAR)
Flow: Low to Moderate, indirect flow
Placement: Lower rockwork or shaded areas
Aggression: Mild to Moderate (can spread over time)

Mushroom corals thrive in stable reef parameters:

  • Temperature: 76–79°F

  • Salinity: 1.025–1.026

  • Alkalinity: 8–9 dKH

  • Calcium: 400–450 ppm

  • Magnesium: 1250–1400 ppm

Because they lack a skeleton, mushrooms do not demand high calcium uptake like SPS corals. However, stability remains critical for coloration and growth.

Why Choose Mushroom Corals?

  • Excellent for beginner reef aquariums

  • Tolerate lower lighting environments

  • Add movement and texture to rockwork

  • Ideal for nano reef tanks

  • Available in rare, collector-grade morphs

Mushroom corals are also prolific growers. Many species reproduce naturally in captivity by splitting or dropping baby polyps.
